H.E.L.P!....when things get tough we're here to save you!

No one likes it when their computer or network plays up. It’s a big headache and you probably have work that needs to be done NOW, computers seems to know  the worst time to act up. It can be a painful experience, so we’ve compiled this small list of things you can do before calling our HELP Desk just to make the whole ordeal as painless as possible.

• Restart your computer

Reboot (turn off your computer and turn it back on).. Sometimes computers get confused and they try to do something that resulted in an error. If you rebooted your computer and the error does not come back you just saved yourself a phone call.

• Make sure EVERYTHING is connected
If the problem is with some hardware that is connected to your computer, is it turned on? If its your printer is the ready Online light on?  Check all cables, making sure they are in the right slot and fit snug.
If the problem is connecting to the cable or ADSL modem, restart the modem or router and the computer it is attached to. There might have been noise on the line, or a fluctuation in signal or electrics. Restarting all components may solve the problem....Just unplug the power wait at least 10 seconds then plug it back in again.

• Think about what has changed since the system last worked
Have you installed any new software or hardware since the last time the computer worked? If so try to restore the computer back to a previous state when it worked properly. The easiest way to do this is with Windows System Restore. When you use System Restore, you can revert to a saved state without losing personal data including Word documents, e-mail settings and messages, and your Internet favourites list. System Restore won’t lose any data you have stored in the My Documents, My Pictures, or My Music folders either. Click the above link to see how it works    -Windows system restore

• Backup your data, if you can
These days more and more people are storing very sensitive information on their computers. Things can go wrong and your information can be lost. It is an EXTREMELY good idea to backup your important files whether by burning them to CD or DVD, or transferring them to an external memory drive. iTkey can advise you on the best way to do this to meet your business needs.

• Know when you're in over your head
Sometimes the best thing to know is "when to call an expert". If the steps above don’t lead you to a solution or your not comfortable digging in deeper, it’s time to call for help. It is important to know your limits because sometimes there can be more harm done by poking around in areas that are not fully understood.

• Document any error messages you see
Gather some information about your computer before calling for help. Which of operating system are you running, which applications were open when the problem occurred, what was the exact error message, and what were you trying to do, is your computer connected to a simple network or a network domain?
Is the error message reproducible? Every time you do “this” or “that”…what happens. Is the problem consistent or does something different occur each time (that still causes some kind of problem).

• Forgot My Password
Have you forgotten your operating system password? Relax...this is very common so join the club ;-) .... We don't see or store your personal passwords but we can reset your  password and give you a temporary one. That way when you log back in your operating system will ask you to set your own password to what ever you like.
